Our History
The USTB's Research Institute of Macro-Safety Science (RIMSS) is derived from the mining and metallurgy disciplines of Peiyang University since 1895. In 1952, the School of Mining of Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Technology was founded by merging the Institutes of Mining-related disciplines from six different universities, including Tianjin University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Institute of Technology, etc. The Faculty of Ventilation safety, founded in 1957, is the former of the Research Institute of Macro-Safety Science, offering postgraduate and Ph.D. academic programs since 1993 and 1998, respectively and has been assessed as Beijing key discipline in 2002, followed by approval of establishing Safety Engineering as Beijing featured discipline in 2008. In 2011, the institute was authorized to confer the first-level discipline doctorate, established a post-doctoral mobile station in 2012, and was approved to develop Beijing's advanced disciplinary and national first-class undergraduate program in 2019. The University of Science and Technology Beijing's Research Institute of Macro-Safety Science was officially founded on 8th December 2020. It focuses on establishing a full-chain and interdisciplinary talent training system based on the conception of national security. Further, it motivates the "Macro-Safety" cultivation model with a "quaternity" process: research, education, producing and application.
Our Faculty
With the development of 64 years, RIMSS has resulted in building a high-level innovative talent team consisting of the old-age, the middle and the young age, including high-level national talents, national-level safety science experts, Beijing teachers' ethics pioneers, Beijing famous teachers, and Beijing early-career young scientists involved in science and technology. RIMSS consists of three state-level platforms, nine provincial or ministry-level platforms. At present, RIMSS won some high state-level renowned awards, including three state Science and Technology Progress Awards and more than fifty Provincial or Ministry of Science and Technology Progress Awards. Most of thegraduates are recognized as competitive and passionate in both the technique and management fields worldwide. Meanwhile, RIMSS has launched a series of academic organizations, including the International Committee on Mine Safety Science and Engineering (ICMSSE) and the National Association of Deans of Safety Science and Engineering of Universities, playing a vital role in international multi-disciplinary integration and comprehensively developing national safety discipline.
Our Aiming
With the support of Beijing high-level Safety Science and Technology Program, RIMSS implements the holistic national safety conception and meets the significant needs of national safety strategy based on one platform (the Safety Science and Engineering) and two branches (National Center for Materials Service Safety and National Metal Smelting Major Accident Prevention and Control Technology Support Base). Moreover, RIMSS spares no effort in developing Exploitation Safety, Metallurgical Safety, Materials Service Safety, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), Public Safety and Emergency Management, Urban Underground Safety, the study on the rules of law in Public Safety and Safety Education Research and Training with taking advantage of the national first-class disciplinary resources (e.g., Mining Engineering, Material Science and Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering, etc.), aiming to become a top-ranking discipline in the field of Safety Science on national as well as international level.
