Established in December 2008, the Faculty of Materials Service Safety is a part of the National Center for Materials Service Safety (NCMS), the fourth national scientific center. The center is operated by the University of Science and Technology of Beijing (USTB), coordinated with the Institute of Metal Research Chinese Academy of Science, Northwestern Polytechnical University, and Harbin Institute of Technology. NCMS is settled in the "National Engineering Technology Innovation Base" in Changping District of Beijing, covering 317,000 m2 with over 1.5 billion RMB. Its scale of faculty and staff is increasingly expanding and going to reach 500 researchers and 2000 postgraduates in the future.
NCMS takes charge of one of the twelve major scientific and technological infrastructures planned and constructed during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period called Materials Service Safety Assessment Facilities (MSAF). MSAF is designed to carry out the full-scale material /structure safety assessment combing the coupling effect introduced by the real service environment. MSAF focuses on typical engineering materials, typical service environments, failure modes, and critical failure issues, developing the devices group to simulate the materials service condition and reconstruct the failure process. Based on experiments and research, NCMS is engaging in constructing a materials service database, establishing a safety assessment model, and compiling the code and standard of engineering material service safety. Meanwhile, NCMS develops novel material-service-safety technologies related to intelligent sensors, digital twin, and prolonged protection to ensure the national significant engineering project's devices and facilities safety.
The construction content of MSAF includes the following eight sets of facilities:
1. Multiphase Flow Environment Test Facility
2. Atmospheric Corrosion Environment Test Facility
3. High Temperature and High-Pressure Vapor Environment Test Facility
4. Mechano-chemical Coupled Environment Test Facility
5. Extreme/multi-factor Environment Test Facility
6. Special-Regional Environment Test Facility
7. Materials Damage Simulation Platform
8. Opening and Sharing Platform
